The Act of
Lending

We have reached the era when everyone wants to acquire things for free. We enjoy it; we take advantage of it. Hence, most company sell items with big discounts and offer a buy 1 take 2 promo. Honestly, I always check and buy stuff which is on sale so I could maximize my budget. That thing is mine, but what if I just borrow it; it doesn’t belong to me yet, right? I had some experiences when someone would borrow my stuff without even bother of returning it. When I lend something to someone, it goes with an expectation that it will be returned to me since it’s still my property, except if it’s my sister, I know it will never come back, we have that attitude, but that applies to us only, (I normally do that do them actually. ) Anyway, when I lend some of my stuff to someone, I do expect that it will be returned, it should be isn’t it? The same is true if I’m the borrower, I always make sure that I return it. It’s a matter of self respect and respect to the person who lend you. They trust you enough to let you have the thing that they desire. It’s just right for you to return it to the true owner. Remember, it was lend, not give, it differs. I checked Merriam-Webster about the meaning of “LEND”, and below is what I found:
Lend : -to give (something) to (someone) to be used for a period of time and then returned
-To give (money) to someone who agrees to pay it back in the future
-To make (something) available to (someone or something)
Upon reading this, I tried to jot down some things to remember when lending or borrowing item.
·
Give yourself enough respect to return things that you borrow. That is
not yours to keep. It belongs to someone else, well, in this case, to the real
owner.
·
When you borrow something, make sure to take care of it, remember, it’s
not yours.
·
Borrowing is legal, losing it is Illegal; I suppose, but not to the
extent that you will be thrown in jail. But you know what you’ve lost when that
happens? Trust and in some cases, friendship.
·
If by instance, you accidentally lost it, be courageous enough to tell
the owner. She/he deserves to know. (I do.)
·
If you like the borrowed item very much but you cannot afford to buy it
for yourself, do not just simply keep it. Ask the owner politely, who
knows s/he might give it to you, but if it happens that the owner refuse to
give it away, don’t feel bad, it’s the owner’s right to say so. In my case, (I
seldom borrow), and if it happens that I really like the item, I would save
some penny so I can buy it. It’s better that way I guess.
·
In borrowing, the lendee has
no right to lend it to someone else; you’re not playing basketball here. Only
the lender has that right, not a borrower.
·
In borrowing, a borrower/owner
relationship exists, and there should be a timeframe on when the borrowed
item should be returned, the borrower has to comply with it.
·
Just like any other relationship, in borrower/owner relationship, respect and trust are the most
important thing that you have to consider. Respect the trust given to you by
the owner.
·
The owner has the right to
take her/his stuff from the borrower if it’s not being taken care of.
·
The borrower has the right to
request for an extension of returning the item if s/he is not yet finish using
it..but.
·
The owner has the right to say NO
if s/he thinks that the item has been out on the borrower’s possession for
long.
·
In borrower/owner relationship, an
agreement exist, either written or verbal, both weigh the same, therefore, both
parties should respect it.
Note to the borrower: If you cannot follow those words written above, brace yourself because you do not deserve the right to borrow anything from anyone.
Please be reminded, if you have a reputation of not a good borrower, no one will trust you. It will affect your status in a group where you belong, and you will have a negative effect on people around you.
Any thoughts?
